messy – lola young

is it a little old? maybe. to me, though, anything beyond 2010 is new. and besides, lola young won Best Pop Solo Performance for this song this year, even if it is a couple years old. and hey, it’s another tiktok viral song, so i won’t have to do a lot of explaining!

when i heard this on the radio station for the first few times, i was a bit put off by lola young’s hoarse voice and her rap/spoken-word style of delivering the verses. but then, i decided to really give it a listen on my own.

i think the most impressive part about this song is the lyrics. they’re witty (‘you hate it when i cry unless it’s that time of month’- wow!), weirdly poetic, and relatable (young herself called it an ‘ADHD anthem’). the backing instrumental is pretty simplistic, but there’s a good bassline to carry me through the whole five minutes, and i like the short twinkling outro. but honestly, lola young’s voice does enough work for this whole song, and feels like an ode to embracing your own flaws, something we all need these days.

in general, this is a nice pop song! give it a listen if you haven’t already.
