woah, why is franz ferdinand, the 00s dance-punk band, on song of the week-N? well, i mentioned that song of the week-N consisted of songs that are either newer or totally different. so here’s one that’s totally different!
maybe you can argue it’s within the post-punk/indie rock bubble, but i think it’s significant enough of a departure from what i’ve been writing about on song of the week (primarily noise/shoegaze-y rock).
as for why i chose this song specifically, it’s because i had a phase with franz ferdinand’s self-titled album two years ago. it’s the very thing that got me into exploring indie rock, even when i’ve grown out of most of the songs now. but this track has continued to stand out: i think it’s the crown jewel of this album. it’s an indie rock anthem with a satisfying, sing-along chorus, smooth and catchy guitar lines, and a beat you can stomp to. also, you can’t forget alex kapranos’ velvety voice. it’s all done with an arty sophistication, too, and i can see why it continues to be played on the college radio station-the melody’s pretty unforgettable.
give it a listen, in case you haven’t already.
