here’s a song that was recommended to me by a friend! i remember listening to “catalogue” a couple years back by chance in the car, long before i started getting into shoegaze/weirder stuff, long before i knew my bloody valentine was a thing. and honestly, i think “Starjump” is a great song (is it a bit old? maybe) that’s way overlooked.
the main riff is energetic and upbeat, and all it is is a simple assortment of power chords under heavy distortion/reverb, matched with some equally distorted bass. and despite being simple, it works very well- there’s something relaxing and ethereal but slightly unnerving about it, and as the name of the song suggests, it feels very space-rock-esque.
the highlight of this song has to be the vocals, though. they remind me of the synchronized vocals swirlies have (i reviewed one of their songs here), but here they’re more dark, more eerie, kind of ghostly, about some kind of addiction and are a nice compliment to the more uplifting guitars. kudos to my friend for the awesome recommendation, and this is definitely a band worth checking out! (see “flutter“.)
give it a listen, in case you haven’t already.
