stevenson has a tumultuous past, like any important character. he can say with certainty he was born in what is known today as the planet venus. well, he doesn’t know if he was born, or if he was crafted by some face-mask-smith. are disembodied face masks even a species, he wondered once. were there others like him? could they form an identity?
he put this to the test once. in the 1800s stevenson tried to rally a group of fox masks in japan to campaign for legal recognition. he couldn’t understand why they didn’t communicate with him until he realized he was the only disembodied face mask in the solar system that was actually alive.
for maybe a century it became his goal to find other living disembodied face masks outside the solar system. but alas, he found nothing in the vast expanses in space beyond lifeless stars… and other phenomena.
