love my way – the psychedelic furs

maybe you can see where this is going. monday this week just happened to fall on june 1st, so i thought it would be nice to pick a song with some relation to pride month. i discovered this song very recently on the radio, and thought it would be perfect, because the song is literally about loving any way you want to in spite of what others might think. also, this song is in Call Me By Your Name, which i’ve never watched/read, but that makes it all the more fitting.

given the psychedelic furs’ name, i did expect this song to be more… psychedelic, and less new wave. but honestly, this song was pretty fun to listen to. i haven’t seen a better use of a xylophone in any pop/rock number, and it gives the song a kind of frivolity that fits the theme of carefree love. also, cool synth in the chorus. other than that, there isn’t a whole lot to say about this song instrumentally.

when it comes to the lyrics, though, it’s a little more interesting. the lyrics are pretty generic until we get to this verse: (“They’d put us on a railroad”/”They’d dearly make us pay”) which brings to mind apocalyptic persecution, like the holocaust. which is definitely a dark turn for an otherwise happy song, and that’s what makes it more memorable: especially the part were richard butler dismisses these persecutors by taking about how (“There’s emptiness behind their eyes”/”There’s dust in their hearts”). which makes this a little more memorable. give it a listen, if you haven’t already.
