here’s something ‘completely different’ purely because of the fact i can’t put this song, or wilco, into any genre. i did discover this song pretty long ago, around the same time i started listening to interpol (Turn On the Bright Lights was my favorite album for close to two years) but it’s only recently i began looking at wilco again. and honestly, what caught my eye the first time was the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot because i saw the buildings in chicago once.
“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” starts with a cacophony of random mundane sounds that remind me of pink floyd’s “Time” or “Money“. and then you have a vocal melody that remains pretty constant throughout the whole song, and some acoustic guitar that almost makes me consider this folk. that’s quickly disproven, though, as the song falls into some of the wackiest instrumentation i’ve heard- i hear pianos, metal or something scratching, cash registers, static noise, cymbals or an alarm bell ringing perhaps. and it’s an oddly warm song with pretty catchy verses, sweet lyrics with jeff tweedy’s pleasantly nasal voice.
i don’t know how tweedy manages to pull all of these things together, but it works just great. and for someone that’s not usually a fan of folk or country, this has enough wackiness to keep me intrigued. give it a listen, if you haven’t already.
