policy of truth by depeche mode – that guitar sample!

i honestly can’t tell if a song is danceable. around a year ago, during sophomore year, my friends were once looking for music to play at a dance party, and i recommended “I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor” by arctic monkeys to them. i didn’t know that song was only moshable, not danceable. well, that’s what i get for being a nerd without a social life!

but i’m positive this time that “Policy of Truth” is a danceable song, because i wanted to dance like a robot the first time i heard it. “Policy of Truth” is one of the singles from depeche mode’s internationally successful Violator, which… i’m yet to listen to. there’s the drums that you can stomp to (i’m a sucker for the headache-inducing industrial drumbeat) and there’s this post’s namesake- the nasty, loud slide guitar sample that’s as satisfying as a dive bomb.

in spite of its catchiness, and, well, synth-pop-ness, this song has pretty dark lyrics- rather than being about the inevitable consequences of lying, it’s about the consequences of telling the truth. as opposed to its pop contemporaries, depeche mode really sounds like new wave if it had a few glasses of pinot noir while staring out a black penthouse window at midnight. i guess this is why dark wave was invented. give it a listen if you haven’t already!
